The Orchard Panfield

We are a small family run and owned orchard and smallholding in Essex.

Covering approx 7 acres. With a mixture of grass for hay and an established orchard of around 47 trees. Some of which are nearly 100 years old.

We have three Jacob/Charlais cross sheep (Doug,Bramble and new addition Blackberry) to help keep the grass down as well as a small flock of chickens.

In season we sell apples and apple juice as well as eggs, hay and we have started to sell Firewood predominately made up of apple and pear from our restoration work on the trees.

We have owned the orchard for the last 5 years and are slowly restoring it from its run down, neglected, state to a diverse habitat for both our family and local wild life.

We have restored hedges, planted more than fifty new trees both fruit and native species (Thanks to the woodland trust), planted or re-positioned native wild flowers.

Over the next 12 months we plan to continue replanting the orchard with a mix of fruit trees, trim and lay some of the hedges as well as cut back more of the ever invasive bramble.(not the Sheep).

We have planted 50 grape vines and hope to start producing our own wine in the next couple of years once the vines have matured.

Currently we have a resident female Muntjac deer as well as frequent visits from Roe deer.

We regularly see Tawny owls, common buzzards, Red Kites as well as fleeting glimpses of Sparrow Hawks and kestrels. Our latest visitor was a young Badger. Of an evening we see bats swooping over the stables.
