Well this is supposed to be the time of year where all our eyes turn to the weather and the impending hay harvest. Well the weather has certainly been fine this year with the sunniest and driest May on record with only 3mm of rain falling in the entire month. This may be good for our tans (or in my case sunburn) But unfortunately is been a disaster for out hay.
We cut about 2.5 acres of grass to make hay for our animals each year and we sell off any surplus to help cover the costs of the land.Last year was a bit of a let down with only 200 bails harvested, so there was no excess to sell.
That has paled into insignificance compared to this year. After a winter where the field was either under water or at best very boggy we then had three months with hardly any rain. All this resulted in what we laughingly call a harvest. We have managed the vast sum of ….. wait for it, 25 bails. No that is not a typing error that is the sum total of our harvest. To say that we were a little disappointed would be an understatement. It is so bad that I was even contemplating walking round the field with a hoover to try to collect every last scrap.Oh well there’s nothing quite as fickle as nature. I think that this year is just going to be written off and everything reset at New Year. Do you think it is possible just to re run 2020?
Heres to our next harvest The apples.
