Hedging our bets

We have battled the Brambles and harassed the Hawthorn to re-discover a long lost stock fence.

Thanks to a merry band of helpers, fine weather and extensive use of , we have managed to cut back and tame about 100 m of Bramble to re-establish the boundary of the Hay field. We now have a huge pile of scrub to dispose of. Some of this will be laid into the hedge to try to protect the smaller trees/ shrubs. This ancient way of hedging is more selective and allows a thicker, more diverse hedge to develop.

The new boundary will hopefully be populated with native wild birds and the increase in species of trees will provide food for a wider range of animals. The remainder of the brambles will be tackled in October allowing time for the birds to nest and hopefully breed.
